Hongcun Village

Hongcun village lies at the northeast of Yi County, 11 kilometers from it, which covers 188.95 square kilometers. It was built in Shaoxing period of Southern Song dynasty (1131 A.D.), named “ 弘村(Hongcun)” in Chinese . In Qianlong period of Qing dynasty, it was renamed ” 宏村(Hongcun)”, which means prosperous. It has a history of more than 800 years, and is a place where people with the last name Wang live together. Hongcun village has been listed the protection units of the national key cultural relics, the first batch of famous historical and cultural villages, and 5A tourist area in China.

The unique charm of Hongcun is composed of green mountains, green waters, lake lights, cloudy shadows. It is back to the Yangzhan ridge of Mt. Huangshan, Leigang Mountain and so on, and it has the higher terrain. There, rosy morning and evening clouds usually occur, sometimes like ink splashing and sometimes like light painting. That seems a long landscape painting, which merges the natural scenery and the human landscape, and it is appraised as “Village in Chinese Painting”. The ancient people systematically planed and reasonably arranged the village earlier by their intelligence, had its layout like an ox. Hence it is popularly addressed as “Ox-shaped Village”. That is called as “Unique in China”, and known as a miracle of the world’s historical and cultural heritage. The high Leigang Mountain is the perking head, the tall green trees are the horns, the village proper with its crowded houses is the body, the clean ponds are the stomach, the meandering ditches among the houses are the intestines, and the four outthrust bridges are the legs. The village, then, lies peacefully like an ox at ease among the blessing green mountains guarding the fertile farmlands. This kind of ingenious and scientific design not only solves the water used for firefighting, but also adjusts the air temperature, provide convenience for residents ‘production and living, and creates a kind of better environment with “Clean springs in front of every house”.

Hongcun village has hundreds of ancient houses with white walls and blue tiles. Especially, Chengzhi Hall is best among all, called as “Folk Forbidden City”. It was built by a salt seller in Qing dynasty, covering more than 2000 square kilometers, and is a brick-wood residential building. It is big and gorgeous and has a sophisticated technology. In the main hall, the woodcuts are in crossbeams, bucket arches, flower doors and window lattices, have features of complicated layers and many characters, and the characters are on different layers and have different looks. It can be regarded as the best wood carving in the “Three Sculptures” art of Anhui. According to historical records, Chengzhi Hall is the most perfect ancient residence in Yi County, so all travellers from home and abroad can be dazzled with it.

Chengzhi Hall, Jingxiu Hall, Dongxian Hall, Sanli Hall, together with South Lake, quiet and long lanes, shops on both sides of the bluestone streets, ancient woods on Leigang Mountain, sinomenite wood over the wall, centennial Peonies, strict Xuren Hall, Shangyuan Hall and the Nanhu Academy with the plaque inscribed by Liang Tongshu who was the minister of Hanlin and 93 years old at that time, formed a perfect art as a whole. There, traveller are walking with different sceneries, exquisite paintings are seen everywhere, and It also reflects the profound cultural connotation left through a long history. In Qing dynasty, Hongcu village had been a prosperous situation, and it is also in the location of people’s Government on Jilian County up to now. In the mid of 1980s, here’s tourism began to develop. Qiao Shi, Zhu Zhenji, etc. successively visited here. Chen Fuli, Qiongyao, Chen Kaige, etc. also conducted artistic creation in Hongcun. In the 1990s, the number of tourists in Hongcun increased at a rate of 40.5% every year, with most of them from Hong Kong, Taiwan and foreign countries.
