Xidi Village lies on the southeast of Yi County, Anhui Province, which occupies an area of 12.96 hectares. It is surrounded by mountains, with two streams running through from the east and the north to join into one in the south of the village.
All streets and lanes are paved with local stone slabs. The lanes, the streams, and the houses are pleasantly integrated with a rhythmic variation of space. The ancient buildings are mainly of brick and log, decorated with a variety of wood, stone and brick carvings impressively plain and elegant, characteristic of the talent and achievement of the ancient villages in the creating of human residence in southern Anhui and the high historical, article and scientific value. So, Xidi Village is called the Museum of ancient buildings in Ming and Qing dynasties.
Xidi village is an ancient village with the clan blood relationship as the link and all people live there , who have the same family name ”Hu” Hu surname as the family. This village started from 11th century A.D. and the peak period is during 14th -19th centuries. Xidi Village was developing slowly at the beginning of 20th century with the disintegration of feudal patriarchal system in China. But its original forms are preserved completely and have the authenticity and completion for the historical development, because it was little affected by wars and the economic development. There are currently 124 preserved ancient resident buildings and 3 halls of Ming and Qing dynasties, which have been the Key cultural relics protection units in Anhui province. In 1999, Xidi village was determined as the world cultural heritage declaration unit in China, and applied to UNESCO and passed experts’ evaluation and investigation. It was listed in the world cultural heritage list by UNESCO on November 30th, 2000.
There is the Xidi ancient village in Xidi Ancient County, which is known as the World Cultural Heritage Site. Its overall layout, environmental and architectural styles well preserved the ancient styles of Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are 3 ancestral halls, 1 archway and 224 ancient residential buildings to be well preserved in Ming and Qing Dynasties in the village. The buildings with Anhui styles are well arranged with brick, wood and stone carvings. Two rivers pass through the village, and 99 high walls and deep lanes make tourists feel like that they are in a maze.
Xidi Village is to Jiuhua Mountain and Taiping Lake on the west, 38 kilometers away from Huangshan Mountain, 54 kilometers away from Huangshan Airport, and 52 kilometers from Huangshang Train station. And it is more than ten kilometers away from Hongcun Village, Nanping Village and Pingshan Village. One main street and the two waterside roads provide the main structure of its streets and lanes roughly from west to east, expanding to the north and south at the same time.
